How do I get NAATI to translate my document?


NAATI does not translate documents or organise translations. NAATI awards credentials which are used by individuals to work as a translator. If you come to NAATI with a document to be translated we will not be able to assist you other than helping you to find a suitable NAATI-accredited translator.

How do I apply to sit an accreditation test?


You will need to complete the Application for Accreditation by Testing form and supply the additional documentation as set out in the form.

How do I get accredited?


NAATI Accreditation may be obtained in five ways:

  • Passing a NAATI accreditation test.

  • Completion of a NAATI approved course.

  • Specialised tertiary qualifications in translation and/or interpreting obtained from an educational institution overseas.

  • Membership of a recognised international translating and/or interpreting professional association.

  • Providing evidence of advanced standing in translating or interpreting.

How long does it take to get my test result?


Test results will normally be issued between six and ten weeks from the date the test is sat. In some cases it may take longer than ten weeks to complete the marking.

What is revalidation and how does it work?


All NAATI accreditations and recognitions will be valid for a period of three years. At the end of this period individuals must show evidence of having meet the requirements in terms of Professional Development undertaken and sufficient continuing work practice.

What is the difference between a translator and an interpreter?


A translator deals with the written word. They translate written messages from one language to another. If you require a document such as a Birth Certificate, Driver’s License or a letter to be translated into another language, you will require the services of a translator.

An interpreter deals with the spoken word or signed language (Auslan). They interpret what someone is saying from one language into another. An interpreter is required where the speaker of one language wishes to be understood by the speaker of another language, for example, at a medical appointment with your doctor or at a hospital, or in a court of law.
