Recognition

Recognition is an award in a totally separate category from accreditation. It is granted only in languages for which NAATI does not test and it has no specification of level of proficiency.
Status: Recognition does not have equal status to accreditation, because NAATI has not had the opportunity to testify by formal assessment to a particular standard of performance. It is, in fact, intended to be an acknowledgment that, at the time of the award, the candidate has had recent and regular experience as a translator and/or interpreter, but no level of proficiency is specified. After 30 September 2006 it will also acknowledge that the Recognised person has reasonable proficiency in English and has completed basic preparation training.

Post 1 July 2006 criteria:
On application for Recognition the candidate must have evidence of English proficiency and the two referee reports.

1.       Sufficient English proficiency demonstrated by:

    1. A score of at least 6 (general) on the IELTS test; OR
    2. The equivalent to IELTS 6 (general) or above on any other recognised English proficiency test as assessed by NAATI.
    3. NAATI accreditation in any language at the Paraprofessional level or above; OR
    4. NAATI Recognition in any language, obtained on the post 1 July 2006 criteria; OR
    5. Evidence that the candidate’s first language is English.

2.       Two referee reports meeting the following criteria:

      1. At least one reference must be from a Translator and/or Interpreting service provider, where the candidate has been contracted or employed for at least three months.
      2. Each reference must demonstrate that the candidate has completed some work in the language and skill for which they are applying for Recognition.

Each reference must be in the format stipulated in the Recognition Application form. This includes completion of the Referee for NAATI Recognition form and inclusion of the extra documentation from the provider of the referee as stated on this form.

3.       Completion of a short training course:
For Recognition to be granted candidates must complete the NAATI online course ‘Introduction to Interpreting’ or an equivalent course recognised by NAATI. This requirement for a course can be completed either before application, OR after an application has been made

Examples of equivalent courses recognised by NAATI include:

  1. NAATI workshops in Interpreting or Translating delivered in its state offices
  2. T & I Preparatory courses offered by tertiary institutions

If you are unsure of whether a course will meet the NAATI’s criteria please contact the NAATI Central Office.

This requirement for a course can be completed either before application, and then the evidence of completion just needs to be included with the application form, OR after an application has been made. If it is to be completed after an application has been made it must be done within three months of the application date, that is the date the application is processed by NAATI. For this purpose the application form for the online ‘Introduction to Interpreting’ course offered by NAATI has been included with the Recognition application form.

For more information on the Recognition requirements please refer to the Application for Recognition form.
