Two (2) and a half hours in length, plus 20 minutes reading time.

Section One: Translation from English or from LOTE

Three (3) passages of approximately 250 words each in English, in different styles and subject areas, TWO (2) of which are to be selected and translated into the language other than English. The passages may be drawn from subject areas including culture, science, technology, health, law, commerce and related fields all aimed at the non-specialist reader. (45 + 45 = 90 marks)

OR: Translation into English

Three (3) passages of approximately 250 words each in the language other than English in different styles and subject areas, TWO (2) of which are to be selected and translated into English. The passages may be drawn from subject areas including culture, science, technology, health, law, commerce and related fields all aimed at the non-specialist reader. (45 + 45 = 90 marks)

Section Two: Ethics of the Profession (10 marks)

Three (3) questions on ethical issues will be asked, two (2) of which are to be answered by candidates. Answers should be clear and concise, averaging no more than 150 words. Answers may be written either in English or the other language no matter which direction the candidate sits.
In the case of Greek, a passage in Katharevousa will be compulsory. In the case of Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin), candidates will select one (1) passage from two (2) printed in the traditional full form and one (1) from two (2) printed in the simplified form.

Pass Mark

Each language direction is treated as a separate test. To obtain accreditation, candidates must achieve a total of 70% with a minimum of 63 out of the possible 90 marks for the translation passages, providing that no single passage has been awarded a mark less than 29. Candidates must also obtain a minimum of five (5) out of a possible ten (10) marks for the ethics questions.
