Monash–NAATI Intercultural Competency Research Published

In November 2024, we reported on a research collaboration between Monash Intercultural Lab and NAATI. The research findings from the Monash team have now been published in the latest edition of The Interpreter and Translator Trainer (ITT), an international journal in the field of T&I studies that specialises in training related issues.

The article titled Intercultural Competence: trainee translators and interpreters’ experiences of a ‘stand-alone’ module examines trainees’ perceptions of NAATI’s Intercultural Competency (IC) module based on an end-of-course survey, and follow-up interviews with a select group of trainees. Using qualitative and quantitative data gathered from these responses, the paper discusses trainees’ experiences of the IC module—what they learned, what they would have liked more or less of, and how relevant it was to their professional work. It then explores the role IC training may play for future practitioners and in T&I training more broadly.

A positive outcome from IC training is that it is relevant to almost any occupational group and applicable to settings outside work. More than half of the responses from participants in the research expressed an interest in learning more about intercultural competency. The intercultural competency course is now free PD offered on NAATI Learn.

Since 2024, the course is accessible to all practitioners.
