Help recognise excellence in interpreting and translating: Nominations for the Multicultural Community Medals - Interpreters and Translators Medal now open
The interpreting and translating profession plays a vital role in ensuring people across communities can access justice, healthcare, education, government services and essential information in the language they understand.
To celebrate these important contributions, nominations are now open for the 2027 Multicultural Community Medals and Honour Roll, including the prestigious Interpreters and Translators Medal, sponsored by NAATI.
Presented by Multicultural NSW, the Interpreters and Translators Medal recognises an interpreter or translator for the role they play in ensuring that the community of NSW has access to essential information and services.
The recipient will be an outstanding language professional whose leadership, innovation and dedication have strengthened communities across NSW. They are a changemaker and role model whose work fosters inclusion, breaks down communication barriers, and helps build a more connected and harmonious state.
Our 2026 recipient – Marta Barany
The 2026 Interpreters and Translators Medal was awarded to Marta Barany in recognition of her more than 50 years of service to the language profession. Throughout her career, Marta contributed to the establishment of the Telephone Interpreting Service in 1972, the creation of NAATI, and served as an Ethnic Affairs Commissioner. At 93 years of age, her ongoing passion for the profession is an inspiring reminder of the extraordinary contribution interpreters and translators make every day.
