Online discussion panel: Evolving technologies: a threat or an opportunity for translators and interpreters?

NAATI will be hosting a special online discussion panel on the topic of evolving technologies in the T&I industry on Thursday 16th October from 5:30pm to 6:30 pm (Sydney time).

Our guest speakers, Professor Marc Orlando from Macquarie University, Mr Balázs Kis, Chief Evangelist and Executive Board Manager at memoQ, and NAATI representative, Mrs Aurélie Sheehan, Manager – Certification Policy & Development, will discuss technological evolutions, how practitioners can leverage technology and what tools and support are available to them.

Time will be allocated for Q&A.

Our speakers

Marc Orlando is a Professor of Translation and Interpreting Studies and Program Director in the department of Linguistics at Macquarie University, Sydney. His research interests are in the training of translators and interpreters and in the synergies between practice, research and education, as well as in the impact of new technologies on the T&I professions. He is also an active conference interpreter, member of AIIC and NAATI certified.

Aurélie Sheehan is a member of NAATI’s Senior Executive Leadership team. Since 2020, she has been focusing on NAATI’s Certification development and continuous improvement strategies while overseeing examiner training, certification test materials creation and test design for both specialist and non-specialist certification tests. She is a member of AUSIT and has been a NAATI-Certified English to French translator since 2010.

Balázs Kis, is one of the founders and owners of memoQ. Originally an engineer in computer science, he later earned a doctorate in applied linguistics. Since 1994, he has been involved in translation technology and language technology research and development. As a member of MorphoLogic in the 1990s and 2000s, he participated in numerous projects in this field. Additionally, Balázs spent ten years in book publishing, where he managed IT books and was one of the most published Hungarian technical writers at the time.   As memoQ continued to grow, he expanded his responsibilities with new professional knowledge in areas such as compliance and mediation. Currently, he primarily works on memoQ’s vision and strategy related to artificial intelligence.
